SUMMARY:The Transit of Venus from Jeremiah Horrocks 1639 to 2012 - Graham McLoughlin
DESCRIPTION:Tonight we will hear the fascinating story of Jeremiah Horrocks from Much Hoole near Preston\, who was known as the Father of British Astronomy.  He was the only person to predict the transit of Venus of 1639 and was one of only two people to observe and record the event.\nHorrocks was also the first person to demonstrate that the Moon moved around the Earth in an elliptical orbit but\, most remarkably\, he correctly asserted that Jupiter was accelerating in its orbit while Saturn was slowing and interpreted this as due to mutual gravitational interaction\, thereby demonstrating that gravity’s actions were not limited to the Earth\, Sun\, and Moon. \nRomanticised Victorian painting of Horrocks making the first observation of the transit of Venus in 1639\nA representation of Horrocks’s recording of the transit published in 1662 by Johannes Hevelius\nJeremiah Horrocks memorial\, Bretherton

SUMMARY:Canary Girls Forgotten Heroines of WW1 and WW2 - Valerie Welty
DESCRIPTION:The “Canary Girls” were women who worked in munition factories during World War I and World War II\, earning their name because toxic chemicals like TNT and cordite caused chemical jaundice\, turning the workers’ skin and hair yellow. \nThe sacrifice of soldiers killed during World Wars One and Two is well-documented\, but the efforts of munitions workers stained yellow by toxic chemicals is a story much less told.  A campaign now hopes to honour the so-called Canary Girls\, who risked life and limb to supply ammunition to the frontline and there are plans to unveil a statue at the National Arboretum in Staffordshire. \nWomen in munitions factories were tasked with filling shells with explosives.
